I'm always on the lookout for ways to source ingredients from my area. When I first bought my Michigan place, I was delighted to find Pioneer Sugar in the grocery store. It's owned by the Michigan Sugar Company near my hometown of Saginaw. It's beet sugar, and while I've heard pastry chefs swear by cane sugar for intricate sweet concoctions, I consider beet sugar great for general baking. And I support local agriculture and reduct my food miles. Sweet indeed.
